Scene 16 - Questions, Answers (page 164)

Ye Gods, there's a million, billion French people at St. Pancras.
For those of you who are not aware, the Eurostar trainline linking the centre of Paris to the centre of London (a 5 hour trip) has just opened. And apparently, loads of French people want to come to London - something I had never previously considered. British people going to Paris, yes, obviously. But why would French people want to come here?
I guess when you suffer a hellish journey through a city every two weeks, you have trouble thinking of it as a fun, weekend-break type destination. No doubt the French feel much the same about all the crazy English people flooding into the centre of Paris.
In other news, I've bought a watch. I managed to resist the urge to buy a fob watch, despite the fact that they're clearly great and there was one right there. I had to admit that it would be completely impractical. What with me not having a waistcoat pocket and stuff.
During my watchless period, I discovered something surprising. A lot of people don't have watches any more. I kind of assumed that everyone had a watch, but they don't. They have mobiles. Whenever I asked someone for the time, instead of glancing at their wrist, they'd go through this prolonged pantomine - patting all their pockets / searching through their handbag etc. Because, of course, mobile phones are never where you think they are. Then they had to switch the damn thing on and wait for it to have a little think.
I stopped asking people in the end, because it just got embarassing.
So ... mobile phones are the new fob watches? I mean, you can get little chains for them and everything ...
