Scene 17 - Secrets (page 185)

Today, I ate a dragon fruit. I nearly didn't because it's from Vietnam, so I got the air-miles-carbon-dioxide-we're-all-going-to-die-guilt-guilt-guilt. But on the other hand, it was really weird looking and had an awesome name. So I bought one. It was fairly expensive, but probably nowhere near as expensive as it should've been. Like maybe I should have given them one of my kidneys or something. Fruit from Vietnam ... it's crazy when you think about it.
For those of you who haven't eaten one before, it's kind of like the fruit someone would have designed if they'd got really, really bored of kiwi fruit due to never having eaten anything else in their life. It's a bit bigger than your fist, and is bright maroon with green spikes. Inside, it's like someone has mixed up the white bit in a kiwi fruit with the black pips and got rid of the green bit altogether. It tastes a little like that as well. Though of course, this is just what it tastes like if you buy it from a supermarket in Britain. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit different picked fresh off the dragon fruit tree.
